Emerging Artists Competition Introduces High School Students to "The Sound of Art!"
The “Sound of Art!” rang out on April 8 on USCB’s Beaufort campus, when the annual Emerging Artists Competition brought talented high school juniors and seniors to the Center for the Arts. This annual event is a juried exhibition initiated by the Studio Arts Program of USCB in 2010 to support and showcase exemplary artistic achievements of area high school students.
This year’s Emerging Artists exhibition was entitled “The Sound of Art!” and included a chamber music concert for the young attendees.
Eleventh- and twelfth-graders from public and private secondary schools in South Carolina and neighboring counties in Georgia submit works of art for consideration by a panel of judges drawn from the university’s faculty in the Studio Art program. The works represent painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics and media arts.

On the day of the Awards Ceremony, selected young artists come to USCB, attend the ceremony, tour the campus and are invited to participate in workshops conducted by USCB Art faculty.
The Emerging Artists program is USCB's invitation to encourage high school artists to pursue the visual arts. It showcases USCB's Studio Art degree program and arts scholarship funds. For more information contact USCB Studio Art Program Coordinator Jim Sidletsky.
The event included a concert, tours, awards, lunch, and an interactive ceramic and drawing workshop.
The Winners from the USCB Emerging Artists 2024 Awards include:
1st Place : Bella Pratt, Lowcountry Love, painting. Hilton Head Christian Academy
2nd Place: Keira Page, Mortem Solis, cyanotype with glow in the dark paint. Easley High School
3rd Place: Neko Goldston, Blu, Ballpoint pen and acrylic paint. Spring Valley High School
4th Place: Haleigh Perkins, Similar Cycles, Fibers. Fine Arts Center High School
Honorable Mentions: Angelina Stanley, As the Color Comes Back, digital painting. Wren High School. Vy Tran, New Year’s Blessing, color pencils. Ridge View High School. Bailey Bates, Duality of Wealth, color pencil, paper, embroidery thread. Bridges Preparatory Academy
The University and the community are grateful to Walda Wildman and Katherine Wells for commissioning the musical composition “Apollosis” and the South Carolina Arts Commission for underwriting the production of the student art show and the student concert.
The USCB Emerging Artists Competition is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. This project is supported by funding provided to the South Carolina Arts Commission from a partnership with the S.C. Department of Education from American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) funds.
