USCB Announces New Graduate Programs in Literacy

USCB’s new Literacy graduate programs are designed for working teachers.

USCB’s new Literacy graduate programs are designed for working teachers.

The University of South Carolina Beaufort has launched a graduate program in Literacy, designed for current teachers. Beginning Summer 2021, USCB’s Education Department will prepare teachers to improve reading achievement in K-12 classrooms in the South Carolina Lowcountry and beyond.

USCB’s new program provides a combination of on-campus, on-line, and field-based coursework. It is designed for those seeking a master’s degree in literacy and those who need master’s level courses for the SC Read to Succeed Endorsement

There are three ways to participate:

The new M.Ed. in Literacy is a 36-credit hour degree program, leading to add-on certification as a Literacy Teacher and Literacy Coach.

The Graduate Certificate is a 12-credit hour series of 4 courses, leading to an SC Read to Succeed Endorsement

One Course at a Time for professional development on an as-needed/as-interested basis.

Dr. Bruce Marlowe, Chair of USCB’s Department of Education, said participants who successfully complete the program will be able to:

  • Design literacy curricula that meets the needs of all learners, particularly those who experience difficulty with readingmplement and evaluate small-group and individual instruction for learners

  • Select, and use appropriate assessment tools to screen, diagnose, and measure students’ literacy achievement

  • Collaborate with school personnel to use a variety of print and digital materials to engage and motivate all learners

  • Integrate digital technologies in appropriate, safe, and effective ways that supports a literacy-rich learning environment

  • Construct research-based literacy programs within the school

  • Serve as in-house literacy leaders, guiding faculty and staff in becoming highly effective literacy teachers
